England keeper Jack Butland backed by Gordon Banks

Jack Butland hopes he is back on track for the World Cup – with a little bit of help from Gordon Banks.

The Stoke goalkeeper made a surprise return from a broken finger suffered on England duty last month for Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Swansea.

The injury prevented Butland from playing in England’s friendly against Brazil and furthering his claim to what is the most hotly-contested shirt for next summer’s tournament in Russia.

Joe Hart played instead – while Jordan Pickford and Tom Heaton are also strong contenders – but England’s World Cup-winning keeper Banks voiced his opinion this week that Butland should be first choice.

The pair have become close since Butland took over as Stoke’s number one and have regular chats.

Butland said: ‘Gordon is amazing. I speak to him every other week nearly. He’s always got my corner. He’s a great person to have on my side.

‘He called me after I broke my finger. We don’t have technical chats, we just have a nice chat.

‘We’ve had chats about his England career and we’ve spoken about the World Cup back then. But he is really eager to know what it’s like nowadays and what my routine is like.

‘I couldn’t really get a word in because he wants to know what we get up to as goalkeepers now in training and everything like that, but maybe next time I can ask him a little bit more about his stuff without him leading the conversation.’

It was particularly unfortunate for Butland to suffer another injury on England duty after the broken ankle he sustained against Germany last March that sidelined him for more than a year.

Thankfully, this one was much less serious, keeping him out for only four weeks.

‘To miss out on playing for your country sucks,’ said Butland.

‘Then that carried on into missing games for Stoke as well so it’s disappointing and not great timing, but hopefully I’ll have a little bit more luck now going into the rest of the season and hopefully get myself in the squad for the summer.

‘Injuries are injuries and touch wood I’ve never had too many.

‘I had a horrible one with my ankle, which wasn’t my fault and was prolonged with mistakes from the outside, but I’m back where I want to be now.

‘I never feel like I’m miles away, I’m just doing what I can do and hopefully I’ll get the nod.’

Butland’s return was a fillip for a struggling Stoke side, for whom this was just a second win in eight matches.

The keeper played his part with a terrific late save to prevent Ryan Shawcross scoring an own goal after Xherdan Shaqiri and Mame Diouf had turned the match around following Wilfried Bony’s early opener.

Butland said: ‘I made the decision on Friday. I felt like I was ready, the physios were happy with everything and the goalie coach had seen enough to know I was ready to play.

‘Then we spoke to the manager, who was delighted, and that was that.

‘It was strapped up, in a splint, immobilised and all that nonsense, but it’s good enough that I can play through so I wanted to get back out there.

‘We just needed to win. We’ve had a tough run and some disappointing results. We do like making it hard for ourselves and we did that again with going down so early, but it was great character shown by the lads.’

LA Critics name ‘Call Me By Your Name’ best film of 2017

Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) – The Los Angeles Film Critics Association has voted “Call Me By Your Name” the best film of the year, bestowing a total of three awards on Luca Guadagnino’s erotic coming-of-age tale.

The critics announced their awards Sunday on Twitter. They also named the film’s breakout star, Timothee Chalamet, best actor.

Guadagnino shared in the award for best director with Guillermo del Toro for “The Shape of Water.” Del Toro’s Cold War-era fairytale also came away with three awards.

The wins further solidified “Call Me By Your Name” as an Oscar favorite. It also won best feature at last week’s Gotham Awards.

Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” which the New York Film Critics Circle named best film, landed one award from the Los Angeles critics: Laurie Metcalf for best supporting actress.

Feinstein: Senate building obstruction case against Trump

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, told NBC’s Chuck Todd on Sunday that the Senate was putting together an obstruction of justice case against President Donald Trump.

‘As you know, I’m ranking on Judiciary and the Judiciary Committee has an investigation going as well and it involves obstruction of justice,’ she noted. ‘And, I think, what we’re beginning to see is the putting together of a case of obstruction of justice.’

The contents of the indictments and statements made by the White House show signs of obstruction of justice, Feinstein suggested.

‘I see it in the hyper-frenetic attitude of the White House, the comments every day, the continual tweets,’ she said. ‘And I see it, most importantly, in what happened with the firing of Director Comey and it is my belief that that is directly because he did not agree to lift the cloud of the Russia investigation.’

Comey was fired by President Trump in early May.

‘That’s obstruction of justice,’ the top Judiciary Committee Democrat said.

President Trump has continually stated that he’s not the individual who is under investigation, Todd reminded the senator, asking her if she thought Trump was.

‘Well, I would assume that many in the White House are under investigation in this,’ Feinstein said.

She added that she did not believe that former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty of lying to the FBI on Friday, was a ‘rogue agent.’

Flynn’s plea was over conversations that he had with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak during the transition.

Conversations he initially didn’t tell authorities about.

‘I don’t believe that on his own conclusion, he would go out and try to tell the Russians in two instances, once to stop a national security resolution going through the United Nations regarding Israel, and on the sanctions that President Obama had just put in, urge that they not be tampered with by the transition committee,’ Feinstein said.

‘I think he had to have been directed,’ she noted. ‘Now whether the special counsel can find that evidence or not, whether we can, I don’t know yet. But I see that that’s where this is going.’

Feinstein said that Flynn cooperating with Mueller’s investigation doesn’t necessarily slow down the probe the Senate Intelligence Committee, which she also sits on, is pursuing.

‘I think the investigation that really has the clout is Bob Mueller’s investigation,’ she noted. ‘He’s got all the tools he needs, investigative and legal, to do what he needs to do. And I think what we’re seeing is some of the fallout from that.’

She suggested that witnesses are becoming more forthcoming to the Congressional committees probing Russia, because of Mueller’s investigation.

‘For example, Jared Kushner,’ she said.

Feinstein said she and Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, had sent Trump’s son-in-law and top White House adviser a letter asking for information.

‘He has agreed to give it,’ Feinstein said. ‘I think that’s very important … I think there’s no question, but that he is a principal in this.’

She paused saying the doesn’t make ‘allegations.’

‘But I think his testimony would be very important,’ Feinstein said of Kushner.

Todd also pressed Feinstein on impeachment, as Democratic super-donor Tom Steyer, who’s also a Californian, has been running pro-impeachment advertisements on TV.

Feinstein said she had to be cautious because of her role on the Judiciary Committee, which is investigating some of the Russia stuff, but that she was losing patience with this president.

‘Now, I’m not without the powers of observation, or seeing what’s going on around me,’ Feinstein noted.

‘The concern rises with the day,’ she said.

Todd interrupted and asked if she meant a concern over the president’s ability to do his job.

‘Oh yes, oh yes,’ she answered. ‘I’ve been here for 25 years now, there is a kind of instability, unpredictability. It’s one issue after the other. We’ve got major problems in the world with our allies now, in the Middle East, with North Korea. It goes on and on.’

‘And I think that this president is just precipitating more and more angst that’s going on to lead to serious discord,’ she added.

Todd asked when the longtime senator hits her ‘enough is enough’ moment.

Feinstein confessed that had already passed.

‘Well, it happened about a month ago, and I can’t give you any particular event,’ she said. ‘But it happens – you know, those of us that are here – understand how the White House functions.’

‘And, as you begin to see, one day it’s one story, the next day it’s another story, the third day it’s another story, it’s very concerning to get at the truth,’ she said.

Todd tried taking it a step further, asking the senator, ‘Do you believe it’s time to think about getting him out of office?’

Feinstein wasn’t quite ready to make that proclamation yet.

‘I believe it’s time for us to finish our investigation and I don’t want to bias any part of the investigation with premature thinking,’ she answered. ‘I think that’s very important.’

Rebekah Vardy shows off her figure in the shower

She sparked outrage among I’m A Celebrity viewers after an old tweet re-surfaced.

But Rebekah Vardy looked blissfully unaware in forthcoming scenes from Monday evening’s episode as she enjoys a shower thousands of miles away in the Australian jungle.

The WAG, 35, took the opportunity to flaunt her incredible figure in a low-cut white bikini top and black bottoms.

Making sure not to get her head wet, the brunette wore her sun-kissed locks in a messy up-do.

During their stint in the jungle, contestants are forbidden from contact with the outside world, meaning Rebekah is unaware of the reports that have been circulating about her.

On Saturday night an old Tweet surfaced, which saw her refer to a ‘ginger gay w**ker.’

While many still want her to be crowned Queen of the Jungle, others are now campaigning for her removal from the show after Jack Maynard’s axe last week – when homophobic and racist tweets were dug up from his past.

Viewers uncovered supposedly similar homophobic tweets that Rebekah had posted on her account a while ago, calling for her to be removed on the same grounds as Jack.

The tweets in question said: ‘@MrHarryWood: @Xelahopkins1984 @Little_Miss_Foz what about the 3rd “bird” the gay walker? @jay_walker25 ginger gay w**ker ha ha PMSL.’

While, to the bystander, this tweet mostly doesn’t make sense, the words ‘gay’ and ‘ginger gay w**ker’ caught the eye of her critics, demanding she be taken off the show.

However her friend Jay Walker, who was mentioned in the tweets, stepped in to clear things up.

‘I hate to disappoint people ‘[but] this tweet was to me & we were all just repeating names a guy had called us.

‘Nothing homophobic about it & actually mocking someone who had been. Rebekah is the least homophobic or malicious person I know so afraid your all very much mistaken. Good luck Mrs Vardy.’

However, the trolls have been out in force as the show has aired nightly – with many calling for the mother-of-four to be axed for the comments.

According to the Daily Star, one wrote: ‘If Jack got removed for something that happened around five years ago then so should Rebekah Vardy.’

While others added: ‘That’s not fair at all, can’t be one rule for someone and a different rule for another’ and ‘She shouldn’t be there as Jack was kicked off. she is a disgrace.’

Meanwhile other fans simply claimed she was fake, with one remarking: ‘Rebekah Vardy is just vile and I hate that being ‘real’ is always equated with someone being a p***k.’

‘Showing her true colours @RebekahVardy being a mean cow towards Iain. She’s only famous for her husband anyway,’ slammed another.

‘I really don’t like @RebekahVardy she’s so bitchy doesn’t seem like a nice person at all,’ came another tweet.

However, others have been showering her with praise online, and are even calling for her to be named the winner.

Meanwhile, Jack crept back to the UK following his removal from the jungle last week.

Speaking to The Sun in another attempt to air his regrets, the 23-year-old YouTube star addressed the claims of inappropriate behaviour towards an underage girl when he was 16-years old.

‘I wasn’t aware she was 14. We had some flirty messages between me and her which got out of hand. What I said to her was disgusting and very very unfair,’ he said.

Jack Maynard’s latest statement in full

I have taken some time to reflect on the comments, tweets and ultimately my behaviour in the past, including a tweet sent in 2011 that is the subject of a story today.

I was young, naive and stupid – but as I said previously, age is no excuse. My immaturity meant that I didn’t stop for a second to think whether these comments would hurt or harm anyone – something I have learnt is entirely wrong. If I had just thought for a moment, about how stupid they were, then I would never have sent them.

Nothing can justify the language I used, there is no defence – I am truly sorry. My childish attitude back then is not a representation of my thoughts and feelings now.

I take full responsibility and regret my mistakes. As an adult, I understand the effect my words have on people, whether I have a big or small platform to speak from. Again, I am so sorry to anyone I have offended or disappointed.

Jack told the girl she was an ‘ugly freak’ and ‘a bore’ after she wouldn’t send him photos of her in her underwear, when the pair met and chatted privately online.

‘I am truly, truly, truly sorry about all of the past comments I made,’ he said.

He also revealed what happened immediately after he was taken out of the reality show and sent back to the hotel.

‘I broke down in the hotel once I’d got out. It all kind of hit me. I was just on my own in the room. My phone had blown up from all my friends and family getting in touch,’ he recalled.

Jack also insisted that his past tweets seemingly making slurs against homosexuals were not ill-meaning, claiming he has many gay friends whom he ‘loves’.

Adding to the furore, it has been reported by that Jack posted on Twitter in 2011 that he would ‘rape’ anyone who helped him grow his online audience on the micro-blogging site.

Shared when the vlogger was 16 on November 11 2001, the post read: ‘If you get me to 1500 followers by tomorrow… I will kiss you……. Most likely rape you though.’

Earlier the same year, the younger brother of singer Conor Maynard posted another tweet which referenced sexual assault again when he replied to a fan with: ‘I raped her… haha.’

MailOnline have contacted Jack Maynard’s rep for comment.

Jack – who boasts more than 1.2million subscribers on his YouTube channel – only deleted the upsetting posts after an eight-year-old messaged him, The Sun claimed.

An insider said: ‘These tweets really are unforgivable from Jack. To joke about such a serious subject shows a real lack of awareness from him, particularly given the fact so many of his fans are impressionable young girls.

‘He cannot use age as an excuse either. It doesn’t matter how old you are when it comes to joking about rape.

The sourced added: ‘He only deleted the tweets after a young girl, who was aged just eight at the time, messaged her hero asking him to take them down.’

Since hitting the headlines again, Jack released another statement about his latest Twitter furore and insisted that ‘nothing can justify the language’ he used.

He added that his ‘childish attitude back then’ isn’t a reflection of his thoughts now.

Jack was sent home to the UK from Australia last week, after being pulled out of the show when his online history came back to haunt him.

Boasting an online following of 1,195,687, Jack was found to have sent out a string of offensive messages on Twitter – featuring the use of homophobic and racist language – between 2011-2013.

He was subsequently accused of sending inappropriate messages to a 14-year-old girl when he was 16, persistently asking her to send pictures in her bra.

The younger brother of popstar Conor Maynard apologised for the ‘disgusting things’ he had done on Thursday in a new YouTube video, and said he felt ‘ashamed’.

Jack’s agent made the decision to pull him out of the show this week after a number of tweets posted online five years ago containing racist remarks resurfaced.

It has now been claimed by The Sun that Jack could lose up to £20,000 a month in lucrative sponsored deals from high street brands.

Big companies including The Body Shop, Walkers and Snickers are said to be cutting off support for the viral star, while his contracts with Cadbury, Puma, Nike, Schwarzkopf and LG are reported to be under threat.

A spokesperson previously explained in a statement: ‘In the last few days Jack has been the subject of a succession of media stories which, given his position as a contestant on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here – filmed in the Australian jungle, with no contact with the outside world, he has been unable to respond to.

‘Since it is only fair that everyone should be aware of any allegations made against them and should also have the right to defend themselves, it was agreed that it would be better to bring him out of the show.

‘Jack agrees with this decision which was made by his representatives and ITV and thanks everyone who has supported him in the show this far.’

The social media star faced further criticism after video footage of the star attempting to guess the age of a teenage girl resurfaced.

The viral clip, filmed for his YouTube channel in September – shortly before his short-lived appearance on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! – captures Jack as he engages in the guessing game with pop star brother Conor, 25, and fellow vlogger Mikey Pearce.

After checking a photo of a young female fan, all three attempt to guess her age, with Mikey playing the game for laughs by telling the brothers she’s six, before Conor opts for 15.

But it is Jack, whose appearance on the ITV reality show been cut short amid claims of inappropriate behaviour towards a young girl, who guesses correctly, telling the group: ‘I think she’s literally 14-years old.’

Upon hearing he has won the game, the social media star raises his arm in triumph before they move on to another girl’s picture.

Jack – who has an online following of 1,195,687 – faces claims he called a 14-year-old Facebook user an ‘an ugly freak’ when she repeatedly declined, in 2011.

The accusations have been made by The Mirror on Wednesday, one day after he was ejected from the Australian jungle and sent back to the UK without a televised goodbye, or his £25,000 fee – where he is said to have ‘sneaked back home on his 23rd birthday’ after going into ‘hiding’ – The Sun reports.

Screengrabs from the private messaging service published by the newspaper appear to show online sensation Jack hounding the teen – whose age may not have been known to the YouTuber at the time.

A representative for Jack Maynard has been contacted for clarification.

Jack, who has since deleted his Facebook account, is accused of writing to the girl: ‘Your boobs are so nice! would look good in a bra shot! ever taken one?’

She responds: ‘Secrets are kept secrets…’ but he persists, saying: ‘You can tell me babe…’

He tries to convince the user that he works as a ‘stylist’, but when she refuses twice more, he replies: ‘You’re a bore’.

She then seemed to insult the vlogger by saying: ‘You’re like… A guy’s brother from YouTube’. Closing the conversation, jilted Jack is seen to reply: ‘Who the f*** even are you? You’re an ugly freak.’

The first suggestion of ‘inappropriate messages’ Jack sent to a fan were revealed on Tuesday, just hours after his immediate exit from the ITV show was confirmed.

The woman, who wants to remain unidentified and is now aged 20, has spoken out about the messages she exchanged with Jack and claimed the star had been ‘harmlessly flirting’ with her, but she found his persistence ‘rude and annoying’.

‘I don’t think he was aware I was younger than him. He was just a bit of a d**khead back then… The thing that most upset me about the messages was when he turned on me – I didn’t see any need for that at all. I’m glad I didn’t send anything.’

Explaining that they did not part on bad terms, the source added: ‘He only saw her as casual and he was just enjoying his time with her. Danielle wanted more and told everyone, but Jack didn’t realise, and when he did he told her that they couldn’t continue.

Last week reports surfaced claiming that axed I’m A Celebrity star Jack and one-time Love Island contestant Danielle had been in a secret relationship throughout, with their last sighting together being just weeks before Jack entered the jungle.

The reports came despite Jack giving the impression that he was single on the ITV reality show, from which he was removed last Tuesday for misconduct online.

In pictures obtained by MailOnline, Jack and Danielle were seen on a cosy night out London’s Radio Rooftop bar in September.

‘Jack and Danielle have spent a lot of time together over the past seven months,’ a source disclosed.

‘They’d quietly attended industry events together and made no secret among pals of how close they were.

‘Jack has been making it sound like he’s single since he’s been on the show but he’s been saying different things around Danielle.’

A representative for Jack Maynard and Danielle Sellers was been contacted by MailOnline for comment.

News of their romance broke shortly after his abrupt exit from the jungle, amid reports he had sent inappropriate messages to a female fan.

But according to reports Jack Maynard’s romance with Danielle Seller is already over, amid claims the blogger ‘didn’t see his as girlfriend material’.

The brief I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Outta Here contestant, 23, and the former Love Island star, were said to be quietly dating over the last seven months, although this was not something Jack made common knowledge.

A source told The Sun: ‘Jack and Danielle are no longer together, he said he didn’t see her as girlfriend material and never introduced her to his parents.

Jack is believed to have met model Danielle through his older brother Conor.

Aside from her raunchy modelling work, Danielle enjoyed her ‘five minutes’ on this summer’s smash hit reality show Love Island.

She was similarly ‘dumped’ from the show in the early stages, saying she ‘so gutted to be home so soon’.

Despite claims of a relationship with Jack, Danielle went into the dating show as a single lady.

She briefly dated contestant Nathan Joseph and it was believed that they would continue to see each other after their time on the show.

Women decorate their exposed breasts to look like REINDEER

Ugly Christmas sweaters might be considered one of the tackiest trends of the holiday season, but this twist on the classic is sure to take the crown.

As the Christmas season ramps up, thousands of people are readying their best ‘ugly’ sweaters to sport out to parties – and that includes ones with strategic cut-outs.

A number of very crafty Instagram users have been hopping on the ‘reindeer boob’ holiday trend, dressing up their exposed breasts to look like Rudolph.

Some of the costumes feature a perfect breast-sized hole snipped out of the front of the sweater, while others just pull down a stretchy top on one side to leave the breast exposed.

Tinsel is used around the edge of the cut-outs to give the appearance of a curious deer poking its head out.

Googly eyes, felt antlers and a big, sparkly red pom-pom ball are used to complete the look.

Ladies participating in the trend have been posting the results proudly to Instagram, tagging it with the hashtag #rudolphboob.

Pre-made versions are sold on Etsy by Salt Lake-based retailer YourSassyGrandma, including a red sweater with a green tinsel-surrounded cut-out.

‘If you want to stand out at your Ugly Sweater Party, then this SEXY reindeer ugly Christmas sweater is for you!’ reads the item description.

Each one of the costumes comes with an up-cycled sweater with eyes and nose prepared with a one-time wear adhesive.

Unfortunately for fans of the design, the sweaters have already completely sold out – though there are men’s versions on offer still for $50 a pop.

Indeed, ladies aren’t the only ones having a go at the trend, with a number of men simply cutting out a hole in a sweater and sticking a pair of felt antlers and googly eyes to make their own reindeer, leaving the exposed nipple in place of a nose.

For the YourSassyGrandma version, the product details instruct ‘the more hair you have on your chest the better, it will make your reindeer look even more furry!’

Sex offender stalking female doctors after escaping

A sex offender is feared to be stalking woman doctors after leaving a notorious compound housing some of Australia’s worst paedophiles and violent rapists.

The 40-year-old man slipped away from supervision at Corella Place on the outskirts of Ararat in south-west Victoria, a transitional facility nicknamed the ‘Village of the Damned’.

He has repeatedly travelled to Melbourne demanding to see only woman doctors at clinics since August.

The man, who cannot be identified, has a history of raping, stalking and assaulting women.

He was convicted on two counts of rape in 2008 after sexually assaulting his housemate’s partner.

He was also convicted of assault in 1995 and has a background of violent crimes, stalking and breaching intervention orders.

Victoria Police and the Australian Medical Association are warning people after several female doctors found themselves in ‘dangerous and unacceptable situations’.

AMA Victoria president Lorraine Baker said more needed to be done to protect doctors from the convicted rapist.

‘The police have been informed, but appear limited in their powers to assist,’ she said.

‘During August and November 2017, AMA Victoria has been contacted by some of our GP members who work in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.’

In August, AMA Victoria sent out a short alert to members warning them of the man’s behaviour

‘The male usually rings and says: “Dr X has seen me in the past and can I make another appointment to see her,’ the warning read.

‘This is a serious issue. Female GPs are being exposed to dangerous and unacceptable situations in their workplaces.’

Trump says FBI reputation is at its ‘worst in history’

President Trump discredited the FBI in a series of tweets Sunday after it was revealed a top counterintelligence agent had been fired from Robert Mueller’s probe.

He wrote: ‘After years of Comey, with the phony and dishonest Clinton investigation (and more), running the FBI, its reputation is in Tatters – worst in History! But fear not, we will bring it back to greatness.’

Agent Peter Strzok was removed from working within special counsel Mueller’s ongoing probe after he was caught sending compromising texts, a new report revealed Saturday.

The deputy head of counterintelligence, who also took lead in the Hillary Clinton email investigation, sent ‘anti-Trump’ messages to a colleague, three related parties told The New York Times in a statement.

It seems another text exchange was discovered during the Clinton email probe between Strzok and FBI attorney Lisa Page – who were said to be romantically involved.

In a report by The Washington Post, the pair exchanged a thread that ‘expressed anti-Trump sentiments and other comments that appeared to favor Clinton,’ an anonymous source revealed.

‘Officials are now reviewing the communications to see if they show evidence of political bias in their work on the cases, a review which could result in a public report.’

The President added: ‘Tainted (no, very dishonest?) FBI ‘agent’s role in Clinton probe under review.’ Led Clinton Email probe. @foxandfriends Clinton money going to wife of another FBI agent in charge,’ he said.

Mueller spokesman Peter Carr confirmed Strzok’s leave in a statement to The Hill.

‘Immediately upon learning of the allegations, the Special Counsel’s Office removed Peter Strzok from the investigation,’ Carr said.

‘Lisa Page completed her brief detail and had returned to the FBI weeks before our office was aware of the allegations.’

Mattis seeks more cooperation with Pakistan on terror…

Associated Press

KUWAIT CITY (AP) – Defense Secretary Jim Mattis will meet with Pakistan leaders Monday to seek common ground on the counterterrorism fight, amid Trump administration calls for Islamabad to more aggressively go after the insurgents moving back and forth across the border with Afghanistan.

Mattis said he wants to work with Pakistan to address the problems, adding that the U.S. is committed to a pragmatic relationship that expands cooperation while also “reinforcing President Trump’s call for action against terrorist safe havens.”

“We have heard from Pakistan leaders that they do not support terrorism. So I expect to see that sort of action reflected in their policies,” Mattis told reporters traveling with him in the Middle East before his trip to Islamabad.

Asked if he was going to press the Pakistani leaders to take more action against the insurgents, Mattis said: “That’s not the way I deal with issues. I believe that we work hard on finding the common ground and then we work together.”

Mattis’ optimism, however, comes despite persistent U.S. assertions that Islamabad is still not doing enough to battle the Taliban and allied Haqqani network insurgents within its borders.

Since the start of the war in Afghanistan, militants in Pakistan have crossed the mountainous and ill-defined border to wage attacks against U.S., Afghan and allied forces. They then would return to their safe havens in Pakistan, where they have had a long-standing relationship with the ISI, Islamabad’s intelligence agency.

In a blunt assessment early last week, Gen. John Nicholson, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, said there have been no changes in Pakistan’s support for militant networks.

He said Pakistani leaders went to Kabul and met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

“They identified certain steps that they were going to take. We’ve not yet seen those steps play out,” Nicholson told reporters in a recent briefing.

The U.S., he said, has been very direct about what it expects Pakistan to do in the fight against the Taliban.

“We’re hoping to see those changes,” he said. “We’re hoping to work together with the Pakistanis going forward to eliminate terrorists who are crossing” between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The White House, meanwhile, condemned Pakistan’s release late last month of a U.S.-wanted militant as a “step in the wrong direction” and warned that it could harm Islamabad’s relations with America and its reputation around the world.

In August, the U.S. said it would hold up $255 million in military assistance for Pakistan until it cracks down on extremists threatening Afghanistan.

President Donald Trump’s tough words about Pakistan as he unveiled the updated U.S. strategy for the war in Afghanistan, infuriated Islamabad and triggered anti-U.S. protests there that Pakistani police had to use tear gas to disperse

Pakistani Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said during a visit to Washington in October that Pakistan was willing to cooperate fully with the Trump administration. He said Pakistan had wiped out militant hideouts with little help from the U.S.

Mattis’ trip to Pakistan comes at the end of a short trip to the region, including stops in Egypt, Jordan and Kuwait.

Bournemouth 1-1 Southampton: South coast spoils are shared

For all the frothy-mouthed, arm-waving madness that went with his message, Pep Guardiola might just have had a point about the attacking qualities of Nathan Redmond the other night. They certainly changed this game.

Was it the Pep talk that did it? That would be wildly overstating its significance. But there can be no doubting the impact Redmond had on this match, given how toothless Southampton looked in the first half while he sat on the bench and how effective they were once he came off it, with his side 1-0 down to a Ryan Fraser strike.

They were growing a little desperate by that point, having been too predictable in most attacks as they drifted towards a fourth defeat in five. What happened next was delightfully close to the ideal script, with the winger bringing some sparkle and delivering the assist for Charlie Austin around the hour mark. He might have snatched the win, too, with a skidding drive that faded wide.

But a point it was and for both teams that was probably about right. For Southampton, it allows a degree of momentum after the disappointment of their late defeat against City and it also develops the argument that Austin should play a more active role in the side after his third goal in two starts.

Considering the side’s struggles with scoring — just 23 goals in their past 25 league games — the 28-year-old would seem to offer the sharp edge that they lack.

Mauricio Pellegrino said: ‘The confidence of a striker is something that is really difficult to train or to buy. You need to score goals. So when you’ve got a player in this moment, like Austin, it’s really good news.’

For Bournemouth, there was a sense of irritation that went beyond them giving up a lead, with Adam Smith booked by Jonathan Moss for diving when appealing for a clear-cut penalty against Sofiane Boufal in the first half. The direct cost was not significant because Fraser scored not long afterwards, but longer term they have the problem of an unjust suspension for five bookings.

POLL’S VERDICT

Bournemouth’s Adam Smith was cautioned by Jon Moss for simulation when he should have been awarded a penalty.

While Smith started to go down ahead of inevitable contact from Sofiane Boufal, he was merely trying to save himself and possibly Boufal from injury.

The Southampton player had slid in for the ball but missed it and his leg was directly across the path of Smith.

Next time Smith is in this position, I am sure he’ll continue his run, be tripped and avoid risk of misinterpretation by the referee. I just hope neither player is injured.

An angry Eddie Howe said: ‘I think it’s a clear penalty, I really do. I can’t work out what the referee has seen. That’s football, you live and die by those decisions and I think he’s got it wrong.

‘It’s hugely disappointing because not only do we not get the penalty but we lose Adam to suspension and it has a knock-on effect to the next game.’

Smith revealed Moss apologised and admitted his mistake. He said: ‘I spoke to him after and he apologised and said it was a penalty. I don’t mind him admitting it but the fact that he booked me and I can’t get it rescinded, that means I’ll miss the next game.’

Howe, like Pellegrino, accepted a draw was fair, but it will feel like more of a missed opportunity for Bournemouth. Indeed, it was telling that Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster was probably the best player on the pitch owing to notable saves from Jermain Defoe, Nathan Ake and Junior Stanislas.

Fraser found a way through and Howe is convinced the Scot can lift his side up the table. ‘He has had a slightly stuttering start to the season and this was a sign of his return to form,’ he said. ‘If he can, then he is a huge player for us.’

Speaking to Collective Hub, the Adelaide-based entrepreneur said the first thing she does every morning without fail is check her phone and read hundreds of direct messages on Instagram.

This, she explained, is how she got ‘so popular’.

‘Have your passion, but also listen to your audience and what they say, because there’s nothing worse than producing something that you think is cool and you think is awesome, but it’s not what they want,’ Kayla said.

‘You have to listen… For example, my clients, they’ll find little things that I don’t see, like, “Oh, you should do this, or you should do this”. and it’s like, “That’s a really good idea”.

‘If you just listen to them, you build a product that your customer wants.’

Kayla also puts her success down to plain old ‘hard work’ and doing things ‘out of love’.

Kayla has also earned the respect of her followers by sharing the positives and the negatives of her daily life and recently opened up about losing the motivation to work out following the death of one of her dogs.

‘I post so many stories of the girls who use my program, and people often ask me for a transformation photo of myself,’ Kayla prefixed her before-and-after comparison.

‘To be completely honest, I don’t have a transformation story or photo, but instead I have posted above a progress photo showing change in my body over the last few months.’

Kayla then explained that at ‘the start of the year I lost one of my dogs’.

‘Now to some of you this may not seem like a big thing, but I was honestly so upset I didn’t really know how to deal with this,’ she said.

Kayla said ‘for a short time I stopped exercising regularly and just kept up my walking and a session where possible’.

While Kayla said she still ate well, ‘I had minimal motivation to do anything else because I was too sad about what had just happened’.
