Rihanna turns heads in bold yellow mini-dress at ceremony

She’s had the ultimate honor bestowed upon her by having the street she grew up on as a child renamed after her.

And Rihanna certainly ensured all eyes were on her as she attended the official ceremony to unveil the newly-named Rihanna Drive in Bridgetown, Barbados, on Wednesday, marking the Caribbean island’s Independence Day.

The Grammy-winning singer, 29, looked incredible as she turned heads in a bold canary yellow shirt-style mini-dress, which hung off her shoulders to showcase her decolletage.

The Shut Up And Drive hitmaker complemented her thigh-skimming number with matching stiletto heels and a tiny purse.

Huge gold hoops, several necklaces and spangly bracelets added a bling factor to Rihanna’s look as she joined Prime Minister Freundel Stuart at the two-hour ceremony.

The pop princess wore her raven locks piled on top of her head and accentuated her naturally striking looks with low-key make-up.

In spite of the rain, Rihanna seemed in high spirits as she attended the ceremony, smiling and waving to fans as she strolled through the streets of her hometown.

The Work hitmaker grew up on Westbury New Road in the Caribbean island’s capital Bridgetown, and last month officials decided to change the name of the avenue to honor the local ‘superstar’.

The statement read: ‘The Government of Barbados will on Independence Day, Thursday 30th November, 2017 officially change the name of Westbury New Road located in St. Michael to Rihanna Drive in honor of Barbadian superstar Ms. Robyn Rihanna Fenty who grew up in Westbury New Road.’

Rihanna is fiercely proud of her Bajan heritage and has kept strong links with the island, regularly traveling back to see friends and family and attend the annual Kadooment Day street party.

The musician was discovered in Barbados back in 2003 by music producer Evan Rogers and moved to New York City in 2005 when she signed a record deal with Def Jam after auditioning for Jay-Z and L.A. Reid.

Rihanna went on to become the first-ever Barbadian to win a Grammy and still owns a $22million property on the island’s exclusive One Sandy Lane resort.

In December 2016, the songstress joined forces with Prince Harry during his 15-day tour of the Caribbean.

As well as teaming up for a series of celebratory events to mark the country’s 50th anniversary of independence, the pair both volunteered for HIV tests to highlight World Aids Day.

In 2012, the singer said growing up in Barbados gave her ‘a thick skin’ because she was ‘teased about being biracial’ while she was at school.

Speaking in an interview with ITV, she explained: ‘A lot of the reason why I am the way that I am and my character has a lot to do with my culture.

‘It really helped to have a thick skin coming from Barbados. I definitely had to learn fast how to ignore things or not let it bother me.

‘From the time I was very young, I was teased about being biracial. That was one of the first things I dealt with, then it went on throughout high school.

‘If it wasn’t one thing it was the other thing. In my home, a lot of the things I saw helped prepare me for this world.’

He called Trump ‘a man who loves our parks, loves our military, and loves our country. The man who brought `Merry Christmas’ back to our nation’s capital, and you did, sir.’

Trump then spoke for five minutes, and discussed the ‘incredible national Christmas tree’ while noting that the tradition goes back nearly a century.

‘The weather we have is the best it’s been in 25 years. In fact I said is it always like this. The secretary said it hasn’t been like this for a very long time, so we’re very lucky.’

He noted that President Ulysses S. Grant signed legislation marking Christmas as a national holiday.

‘For Christians this is a holy season, the celebration of the birth of our lord and savior Jesus Christ,’ the president said.

‘The Christmas story begins 2000 years ago with a mother, a father, their baby son, and the most extraordinary gift of all, the gift of God’s love for all of humanity. Whatever our beliefs we know that the birth of Jesus Christ and the story of this incredibly life forever changed the course of human history.

‘There’s hardly an aspect of our lives today that his life has not touched – art, music, culture, law and our respect for the sacred dignity of every person, everywhere in the world. …. Each one of us is a child of God.

‘That is the true source of joy this time of the year. That is what makes every Christmas merry…. We are called to serve one another, to love one another, and to pursue peace in our hearts and all throughout the world.’

He thanked those serving the needy throughout the year and during this season, and military and law enforcement, and teachers and pastor.

‘And especially tonight I thank America’s families… The family is the bedrock of American life… We ask for God’s blessing for our families, for our nation,’ Trump said.

At the outset of his comments, President Trump noted that people wait with anticipation all year for Christmas.

‘Now as the president of the United States, it’s my tremendous honor to finally wish America and the world a very Merry Christmas,’ Trump said, and the audience cheered.

‘We pray that our country will be a place where every child knows a home filled with love, a community rich with hope, and a nation blessed with faith.’

Since then, every president has carried on the special tradition.

But this year’s event was the first for the Trump family since the president took office in January.

The elaborate decorations on stage were perfect for the occasion.

The stage was covered in red carpet and decorated generously with poinsettias, and boxes stacked like Christmas presents, wrapped in red and white paper – designs included waves, reindeer, and paisley – and with golden ribbon and bows.

The program is set to air on the Hallmark Channel on December 4.
